Airbus A330-343P2F, serial number 116, operated by DHL as D-AJFK. The aircraft began life as a passenger A330-300 before being converted to freighter configuration for cargo operations. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, the converted A330 provides a useful combination of payload capacity, range, and fuel efficiency for express freight services. D-AJFK supports DHL's European and intercontinental logistics network, carrying parcels and time-sensitive cargo between major hubs. The A330 passenger-to-freighter program gives older passenger airframes a productive second career and provides operators with a modern twin-engine alternative to earlier generation freighters such as converted Boeing 767s and Airbus A300s. Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
