Airbus A330-323, serial number 0609, entered service with Northwest Airlines as N807NW. The aircraft joined Northwest's new-generation widebody fleet for transatlantic and transpacific services, replacing older McDonnell Douglas DC-10s on many routes. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW4168A engines, N807NW combined long range, substantial passenger capacity, and improved fuel efficiency. Following Northwest's merger with Delta Air Lines, the aircraft became part of Delta's fleet and continued operating international services from major hubs. Delta subsequently refurbished its inherited A330s with updated cabins, extending their useful careers alongside newer A330neo and Airbus A350 aircraft.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
