McDonnell Douglas DC-10-40, serial number 47847, operated by Northwest Airlines as N159US. Powered by three Pratt & Whitney JT9D turbofan engines, the aircraft formed part of Northwest's important long haul widebody fleet and operated transpacific and other international services. The DC-10-40 was a relatively uncommon variant developed for Northwest and Japan Air Lines, using Pratt & Whitney engines rather than the General Electric powerplants fitted to most DC-10s. N159US helped Northwest build its extensive Pacific network linking the United States with Japan and other Asian destinations. The type was eventually replaced by newer Airbus A330 and Boeing 747 aircraft.
Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for a wide-bodied transport, the DC-10 was first flown on August 29th, 1970. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
