McDonnell Douglas DC-10-40, serial number 47841, operated by Northwest Airlines as N149US. The aircraft formed part of Northwest's long haul fleet and was particularly important on the airline's extensive transpacific network. Powered by three Pratt & Whitney JT9D turbofan engines, the DC-10-40 variant was developed specifically for Northwest and Japan Air Lines and differed from the more common General Electric-powered DC-10-30. N149US operated international services linking the United States with Japan and other Asian destinations as well as selected domestic routes. Northwest eventually replaced its DC-10s with newer Airbus A330s and other more efficient widebody aircraft.
Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for a wide-bodied transport, the DC-10 was first flown on August 29th, 1970. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
