McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30, serial number 47832, operated by Japan Air System as JA8551. The aircraft joined the Japanese carrier's widebody fleet for high-capacity domestic and international services. Powered by three General Electric CF6 turbofan engines, JA8551 offered substantial passenger capacity and long range capability during an era when three-engine widebodies were widely used on major routes. Japan Air System employed its DC-10s alongside Airbus A300 aircraft as it expanded beyond its domestic network. Following the integration of JAS into Japan Airlines, the carrier's distinctive aircraft gradually disappeared as operations and fleets were consolidated under the JAL brand.
Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for a wide-bodied transport, the DC-10 was first flown on August 29th, 1970. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
