Boeing 757-2Y0, serial number 28833, operated by China Xinjiang Airlines as B-2852. The aircraft joined the carrier's fleet for domestic and regional services across western China, where the 757's excellent runway performance, range, and passenger capacity were particularly useful. Powered by two Rolls-Royce RB211 turbofan engines, B-2852 could efficiently connect Urumqi with distant cities while operating from airports affected by high elevations and demanding conditions. China Xinjiang Airlines was absorbed into China Southern Airlines in 2003, and its Boeing 757 fleet subsequently became part of China Southern's operation. B-2852 represents an important period in the development of commercial aviation in China's far west.
Designed as a narrow-bodied, twin-engined airliner to replace the 727, the 757 was first flown on February 19th, 1982. Developed in tandem with the wide-bodied 767 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 757 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
