The Hungarian Air Force operates the Saab JAS 39 Gripen as its primary multirole fighter. Hungary leased 14 Gripen aircraft from Sweden in 2001, later converting the agreement into a long term arrangement. Based at Kecskemet Air Base, Hungarian Gripens conduct air defense, NATO air policing, and training missions. The aircraft provide supersonic interception capability, modern radar, and compatibility with NATO weapons and data links. Hungarian Gripens have deployed to Baltic Air Policing rotations, demonstrating alliance interoperability. The type replaced older MiG-29 fighters, significantly modernizing Hungary's air force and strengthening its role within NATO collective defense operations.
