The Brazilian Air Force operates the Saab F-39E Gripen, a variant of the JAS 39 Gripen E, as its newest frontline multirole fighter. Selected in 2013 under the FX-2 program, the Gripen was chosen for its advanced avionics, AESA radar, data link capability, and favorable operating costs. Brazil is assembling many aircraft locally in partnership with Saab, supporting technology transfer and domestic aerospace development. The F-39E performs air defense, strike, and reconnaissance missions, replacing older Mirage 2000 and F-5 aircraft. The Gripen significantly enhances Brazil's air sovereignty and modern combat capability across its vast national airspace.
Designed as a high-performance interceptor to replace the Viggen, the Saab JAS 39 Gripen was first flown on December 9th, 1988. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
