In 2004, F 17 Blekinge Wing of the Swedish Air Force operated the Saab JAS 39 Gripen from Ronneby Air Base. The wing had transitioned from the Saab Viggen to the multirole Gripen, expanding its capability in air defense, ground attack, and reconnaissance. In 2004, F 17 maintained quick reaction alert duties over southern Sweden and the Baltic region while participating in multinational exercises. The Gripen's modern avionics, data link, and short takeoff capability suited Sweden's dispersed basing doctrine. F 17 played a central role in establishing the Gripen as Sweden's primary frontline fighter during the early 2000s.
Designed as a high-performance interceptor to replace the Viggen, the Saab JAS 39 Gripen was first flown on December 9th, 1988. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
