In 1979, F 11 Nykoping Wing of the Swedish Air Force operated the Saab S 35E Draken in the tactical reconnaissance role. Unlike interceptor versions, the S 35E lacked onboard radar and was equipped with cameras in the nose for photo reconnaissance missions. F 11 crews flew low level, high speed profiles to gather intelligence over coastal and Baltic regions, supporting Sweden's neutral defense strategy during the Cold War. The Draken's speed and performance allowed rapid penetration and withdrawal from target areas. F 11 remained Sweden's primary reconnaissance wing until transitioning to the Saab Viggen later in the decade.
Designed as a high-speed interceptor to replace the J29, the Saab J35 Draken was first flown on October 25th, 1955. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
