The Austrian Air Force operated the Saab J 35OE Draken from 1987 until 2005 as its primary air defense fighter. Acquired second hand from Sweden, the aircraft were refurbished and modified for Austrian service. The Draken provided supersonic interception capability, replacing the Saab 105 in the air defense role. Equipped with radar and short range air to air missiles, Austrian Drakens conducted quick reaction alert missions to monitor and intercept unidentified aircraft over national airspace. Despite limited modernization compared to newer fighters, the Draken remained effective for sovereignty patrols until replaced by the Eurofighter Typhoon.
Designed as a high-speed interceptor to replace the J29, the Saab J35 Draken was first flown on October 25th, 1955. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
