The Saab J 35 Draken served with the Sodertorn Wing, designated F 18, based at Tullinge near Stockholm. During the 1960s and 1970s, the wing operated the J 35 Draken as part of Sweden's Cold War air defense network. Its mission focused on rapid interception of intruding aircraft over the Baltic Sea region. The Draken's double delta wing design allowed high speed response and strong climb performance, ideal for quick reaction alert duties. F 18 maintained high readiness under Sweden's dispersed base system before the wing was disbanded in 1986 as part of force reductions.
Designed as a high-speed interceptor to replace the J29, the Saab J35 Draken was first flown on October 25th, 1955. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
