The Folland Gnat F.Mk 1 flew for the Indian Air Force as a diminutive but formidable lightweight fighter, licence-built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited following a major Indian order placed in September 1956. Fielding five Gnat squadrons by the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War and eight by 1971, the IAF exploited the type's small radar cross-section and superior high-altitude agility to repeatedly out-turn Pakistan's Canadair-built F-86 Sabres, earning the nickname "Sabre Slayer" after Squadron Leader Trevor Keelor's first kill on September 3, 1965. The Gnat also earned the IAF its only Param Vir Chakra, awarded posthumously to Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon for defending Srinagar in 1971.
