Airbus A320-211, serial number 063, entered service with Air France as F-GFKJ in September 1989. One of the airline's early A320s, the aircraft operated short and medium haul services throughout France and Europe. Powered by two CFM International CFM56 engines, F-GFKJ helped establish the fly-by-wire A320 family as the backbone of Air France's narrowbody fleet. In November 2008 it received a striking 1950s-style retro livery celebrating Air France's 75th anniversary. F-GFKJ was withdrawn from service in October 2013, stored at Goodyear, Arizona, and subsequently broken up in February 2015.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives. More than 4,500 of the A320 family have been produced, almost all of which are still in active service. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
