Airbus A320-232, operated by China Southern Airlines as B-9959. The aircraft joined China Southern's enormous narrowbody fleet for domestic and regional international services throughout China and neighboring countries. Powered by two International Aero Engines V2500 turbofans, B-9959 combines economical operation with reliable performance and the flexibility required for high-frequency routes. The aircraft remains active in 2026, operating services between major cities including Haikou, Zhengzhou, Qingdao, Changchun, Chongqing, and Xi'an. The A320 has long been a core component of China Southern's short and medium haul fleet, complementing Boeing 737s and newer A320neo-family aircraft.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
