Airbus A330-343, serial number 1357, entered service with TransAsia Airways as B-22101 in November 2012. The aircraft was one of the widebody A330s acquired as TransAsia expanded beyond its traditional regional network. Configured with Business and Economy Class seating and powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, B-22101 operated international services from Taipei to destinations including Japan and Southeast Asia. It was withdrawn when TransAsia ceased operations in 2016. The aircraft later served Avianca as N803AV and was subsequently converted to an A330 freighter, eventually entering service as B-LDW for Air Hong Kong on behalf of DHL.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
