Germany had approximately 1,700 trucks in North Africa with the majority falling into the medium class. The greatest portion of the medium class vehicles were either Krupp Protze or the Opel Blitz. The trucks were used by the artillery, also as troop carriers and with supply and service units. As part of the DAK (Deutsches Afrika Korps) the legendary 21st Panzer Division fought in all the major battles of the North Africa campaign. Rommel's advance toward Egypt depended heavily on being re-supplied by these vehicles.

Opel Kfz.305 Blitz Cargo Truck

Designed as a series of light and middle-weight trucks for various civilian and military purposes, the Opel Blitz was produced between 1930 and 1975 but is best known for its role in WWII. This 3-ton workhorse served in all German theatres; it carried troops and supplies and was also used as a service vehicle for the Messerschmitt Me 323. This truck's history is somewhat controversial because of the role GM played in its development-at the time, Opel was a subsidiary of the American manufacturer. The Opel Blitz appeared in the film "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and remains one of the symbols of Nazi Germany during the war.
