Curtiss C-46 Commando, tail number 138, flew for the Israeli Air Force (IDF/AF) as part of the small, covertly acquired fleet that helped establish Israel's air capability during the country's 1948 War of Independence. Israel secretly purchased C-46s from the United States, flying them via circuitous routes to evade export restrictions, with the aircraft serving under 106 Squadron, sometimes disguised as a fictitious Panamanian airline called Lineas Aereas de Panama to obscure their military purpose. As part of this pioneering fleet, tail number 138 supported Israel's desperate early air operations during the nation's founding conflict.

Curtiss C-46 Commando

Designed as a twin-engine transport comparable to the Douglas C-47, the C-46 was first flown on March 26th, 1940.
