Boeing 707-138, registered VH-EBC, serial number 17698, flew for Qantas wearing a special "40 Years of Service" commemorative livery marking a significant anniversary in the airline's history. Also carrying the registration N791SA at points in its career, the aircraft was one of Qantas's fleet of shortened, longer-range 707-138 variants specifically ordered to suit the carrier's ultra-long-haul Kangaroo Route connecting Australia to the UK via the Middle East and Asia. As part of this historic fleet, VH-EBC supported Qantas's pioneering long-haul jet operations during the airline's early jet age expansion.
Designed as the first American turbine-engined airliner, the 707 was first flown on July 15th, 1954.
