Fairchild F-27, registered N746L, flew for Air West, a regional American carrier formed through the 1968 merger of Bonanza Air Lines, Pacific Air Lines, and West Coast Airlines, serving the western United States before Air West's own 1970 acquisition by Howard Hughes and subsequent rebrand to Hughes Airwest. As part of Air West's fleet of turboprop regional aircraft, N746L supported the carrier's network connecting smaller western U.S. cities during a period of significant regional airline consolidation across the American West.
