Boeing 737-2T4(Adv), registered RA-73003, flew for SAT (Sakhalinskie Aviatrassy or a similarly named Russian regional carrier), as part of the airline's fleet of 737-200s supporting domestic Russian routes. Russian regional carriers commonly adopted secondhand Western 737-200s during the 1990s and 2000s as an alternative or complement to Soviet-designed aircraft, seeking the reliability and parts availability that Western types offered following the collapse of the Soviet Union. As part of this fleet, RA-73003 supported the carrier's regional Russian network during this transitional period for Russian civil aviation.
