Boeing 727-225, construction number 19918, was delivered to Northeast Airlines as N1646 in 1968 during the carrier's rapid expansion along the U.S. East Coast. The aircraft operated routes from Boston and New York to Florida and Caribbean destinations, supporting Northeast's growing leisure market. N1646 wore the airline's distinctive Yellowbird livery, which became a recognizable symbol of the carrier. The 727-200 provided increased passenger capacity and range compared with earlier fleet types, improving competitiveness against larger airlines. Following Northeast Airlines' merger with Delta Air Lines in 1972, N1646 transferred into Delta service and continued operations before eventual retirement.
