McDonnell Douglas DC-8-51, registered N278C and named "Carolyn," flew for National Airlines as part of the carrier's fleet of early DC-8s, continuing National's tradition of naming its aircraft after women. National Airlines made aviation history on December 10, 1958, becoming the first airline to operate domestic jet flights in the United States, using a Boeing 707 leased from Pan American between Miami and New York, before building out its own DC-8 fleet. As part of this fleet, N278C supported National's Coast-to-Coast-to-Coast network connecting Florida and the Gulf Coast to the East and West Coasts before the airline's 1980 merger into Pan Am.
