The Boeing 720 was a shortened, lighter derivative of the Boeing 707 optimized for shorter routes with lower payload requirements, and El Al Israel Airlines added 720s to its fleet starting in 1962 to complement its longer-range 707s, achieving an all-Boeing 707/720 fleet by 1967. El Al operated with remarkable efficiency during the 1960s using just a handful of aircraft, relying on high utilization rates and rigorous maintenance standards. The 720 fleet supported El Al's regional Mediterranean and European routes before the airline's fleet modernization toward wide-body 747s in the 1970s.

Designed as the first American turbine-engined airliner, the 707 was first flown on July 15th, 1954.
