Boeing 720-138B, registered G-AVZZ, serial number 17699, flew for International Caribbean Airways (branded here as Caribbean Airlines/Airways) after being delivered new to Qantas in 1959 as VH-EBD, later passing to British Eagle in 1968 and Laker Airways in 1969 before its 1970-1977 lease to serve Caribbean routes connecting the region to the UK. The well-traveled airframe's journey through numerous operators over nearly two decades reflected the common pattern of early jet airliners finding extended careers across multiple carriers worldwide as their original owners upgraded to newer aircraft.

Designed as the first American turbine-engined airliner, the 707 was first flown on July 15th, 1954.
