Boeing 727-291, registered N1648, flew for Northeast Airlines as part of the Boston-based carrier's fleet of stretched 727-200s, the variant Northeast introduced into commercial service in December 1967 as the world's first airline to operate the type. Northeast built its identity around the distinctive "Yellowbird" livery adopted in 1966, and the carrier's pioneering early adoption of both the 707 in 1959 and the 727-200 in 1967 reflected its ambition to modernize rapidly before the airline's 1972 merger into Delta Air Lines.
