McDonnell Douglas C-9A Nightingale, serial number 67-22584, was delivered to the United States Air Force in 1968 as part of the dedicated aeromedical evacuation fleet. Based for much of its career at Andrews Air Force Base, the aircraft was configured with stretchers, medical equipment, and seating for medical staff, allowing it to transport wounded personnel worldwide. Derived from the DC-9-32 airliner, the C-9A combined reliable jet performance with specialized medical capability. Powered by Pratt and Whitney JT8D engines, 67-22584 supported missions across Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. The aircraft was retired in the early 2000s as the USAF transitioned aeromedical missions to the C-17 Globemaster III.
Please note: An optional display stand is available separately if you wish to display this model "in-flight".
Designed as a short-range twin-jet transport, the DC-9 was first flown on February 25th, 1965. Since shorter routes frequently required operation from small airports, the design focused on short-field performance. The most significant decision was to move the engines from under the wings to the tail, enabling the use of full-span flaps, reducing the possibility of foreign-object ingestion and lowering ground clearance for easier servicing at small terminals. The DC-9 spawned many variants leading to the MD-80, MD-90 and Boeing 717. In total, almost 2,500 aircraft were built over a period of more than 40 years. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
