McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32, construction number 47021, was delivered to Scandinavian Airlines as SE-DBY in the late 1960s as part of the airline's major jet fleet expansion. The aircraft operated short and medium haul routes across Scandinavia and Europe, linking Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo with key continental destinations. SE-DBY wore SAS's classic blue cheatline livery and featured a single class or mixed cabin layout depending on route demand. Powered by Pratt and Whitney JT8D engines, the DC-9-32 offered strong reliability, efficient performance, and suitability for operations at shorter runways. SE-DBY helped establish the DC-9 as a backbone of SAS regional jet services for decades.
Please note: An optional display stand is available separately if you wish to display this model "in-flight".
Designed as a short-range twin-jet transport, the DC-9 was first flown on February 25th, 1965. Since shorter routes frequently required operation from small airports, the design focused on short-field performance. The most significant decision was to move the engines from under the wings to the tail, enabling the use of full-span flaps, reducing the possibility of foreign-object ingestion and lowering ground clearance for easier servicing at small terminals. The DC-9 spawned many variants leading to the MD-80, MD-90 and Boeing 717. In total, almost 2,500 aircraft were built over a period of more than 40 years. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
