McDonnell Douglas DC-8-32, registered 9Q-CLF, was one of a pair of secondhand DC-8-33s that Pan Am sold to Air Congo in June 1969, joining sister aircraft 9Q-CLE to support the airline's long-haul international routes from Kinshasa. The aircraft's operator was renamed Air Zaire in 1971 following President Mobutu Sese Seko's authenticite campaign, which also renamed the country itself from Congo to Zaire as part of a broader effort to erase colonial-era naming. As part of this fleet, 9Q-CLF supported the airline's role connecting the country to international destinations during a turbulent period of Congolese/Zairian history.

Designed to compete with the Boeing 707, the DC-8 was first flown on May 30th, 1958.
