Boeing 707-138B, registered G-AVZZ, serial number 17699, was delivered new to Qantas in 1959 as VH-EBD, one of the shortened, longer-range 707-138 variants Qantas ordered to suit its ultra-long-haul routes to Europe. The aircraft later passed to British Eagle in 1968 and Laker Airways in 1969, before being leased to International Caribbean Airways from 1970 to 1977 to support routes connecting the Caribbean to the UK. Sold to IASCO as N600JJ in 1978, the well-traveled airframe reflected the common pattern of early jet airliners passing through numerous operators worldwide over multi-decade careers.
Designed as the first American turbine-engined airliner, the 707 was first flown on July 15th, 1954.
