McDonnell Douglas C-9B Skytrain II, tail number 0046, flies for the United States Marine Corps as part of the military's fleet of C-9 transport aircraft, a militarized derivative of the DC-9 used for personnel and light cargo transport supporting Marine Corps logistics requirements. The C-9B variant, operated by the Navy and Marine Corps, has served in the airlift support role for decades, complementing larger strategic transport aircraft with efficient medium-range passenger and cargo capability. As part of the USMC's support aircraft inventory, tail number 0046 supported Marine Corps personnel movement and logistics needs.

Designed as a short-range twin-jet transport, the DC-9 was first flown on February 25th, 1965. Since shorter routes frequently required operation from small airports, the design focused on short-field performance. The most significant decision was to move the engines from under the wings to the tail, enabling the use of full-span flaps, reducing the possibility of foreign-object ingestion and lowering ground clearance for easier servicing at small terminals.
