Airbus A310-222, registered B-2301, flew for China Northwest Airlines as part of the carrier's fleet of widebody twinjets supporting domestic Chinese and regional international routes from the airline's hubs in Xi'an, Lanzhou, and Nanjing. China Northwest Airlines, founded in 1988 and based in Xi'an, operated a mixed fleet including the A310 alongside Tupolev Tu-154s and BAe 146s before the carrier's 2002 merger into China Eastern Airlines. As part of this historic fleet, B-2301 supported China Northwest's role as one of China's regional carriers during the 1990s before broader industry consolidation.
