In 2019, Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) confirmed pre-research on a sixth-generation fighter, expected by 2035. Early proposals included tailless designs, later echoed in AVIC's 2023 concept reveal. In December 2024, footage showed a trijet, tailless flying-wing prototype flying in Chengdu, escorted by a J-20S. Bearing the number "36," it was tentatively dubbed J-36, though speculation ranged from sixth-generation fighter to regional bomber. The flight coincided with Mao Zedong's birthday, seen as symbolic. Initially unacknowledged, the aircraft was later reported in March 2025 as the "Ginkgo Leaf Jet." By April, reports suggested a possible carrier-capable variant was in development.
