B-17G #42-38083 was delivered to the US Army Air Force in December, 1943 and was quickly assigned to the 8th Air Force's 91st Bombardment Group, based at RAF Bassingbourn in England. It was given nose art featuring the dual names "Man O War II" and "Horsepower Ltd". After surviving 76 combat missions, Man O War's luck finally ran out on November 2nd, 1944. It departed Bassingbourn as part of a mission to attack the oil refinery at Merseburg in the heart of Germany. Shortly after completing their bombing run, the formation was attacked by a huge swarm of 40 to 50 enemy fighters. Riddled with holes and now on fire, Man O War II dropped out of formation and began to slowly roll inverted before falling into a spin. Four crew members managed to bail out and were captured as prisoners of war. The remaining five crew members perished with the aircraft when it crashed near the village of Gnetsch. Designed to meet a US Army Air Corps requirement for a multi-engined bomber to replace the B-10, the B-17 first flew on July 18, 1935. Best known for its role in the US Army Air Forces' daylight strategic bombing campaign during World War II, the B-17 could fly high and had a long range, and was capable of defending itself from enemy fighters. It was also tough, withstanding extensive battle damage, and was capable of carrying a 6,000 lb bombload. The B-17 became one of the symbols of Allied air power, equipping 32 overseas combat groups and dropping a total of 580,631 metric tons of bombs on European targets. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
