The Chengdu J-20 "Mighty Dragon" is a single-seat, twinjet, all-weather, stealth, fifth-generation fighter aircraft developed by China's Chengdu Aerospace Corporation for the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). The J-20 is designed as an air superiority fighter with precision strike capability; it descends from the J-XX program of the 1990s. The J-20 made its maiden flight on 11 January 2011 and was officially revealed at the 2016 China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition. The aircraft was introduced into service in March 2017, and began its combat training phase in September 2017. The first J-20 combat unit was formed in February 2018. The J-20 is the world's third operational fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft after the F-22 and F-35.
Designed as a fifth generation stealth fighter, comparable to the F-22, the J-20 was first flown on January 11th, 2011. The J-20 is radically more advanced than any previous chinese design, using state-of-the-art stealth technology, supercruise capabaility and a modern fly-by-wire control system. Speculation exists that some of this technology may have been reverse-engineered from an F-117 that was downed over Serbia in 1999. Much larger than the F-22, the J-20 is most likely intended for a long-range intercept role with the ability to destroy enemy AWACS and Electronic Warfare aircraft from afar. It is anticipated that the aircraft may reach operational status by 2018. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
