RAF No. 106 Squadron operated the Handley Page Hampden Mk I as a medium bomber during the early years of World War Two. Based at locations including RAF Coningsby, the squadron flew nighttime bombing and minelaying missions against targets in Germany and occupied Europe. The Hampden carried a bomb load of up to 4,000 pounds and was noted for its narrow fuselage and cramped crew stations. No. 106 Squadron became closely associated with the type under Wing Commander Guy Gibson, who took command in 1942. The squadron converted from the Hampden to the more capable four engine Avro Lancaster during 1942.

Handley Page Hampden Mk I

Designed to meet an Air Ministry specification for a twin-engined day bomber, the Handley Page Hampden first flew on June 21st, 1936.
