RAF Hercules C.Mk 1 XV297 served with the Lyneham Transport Wing at RAF Lyneham, longtime home of Britain's Hercules force. Delivered during the late 1960s, the C-130K provided tactical airlift for troops, vehicles, equipment, paratroopers, and humanitarian supplies. XV297 participated in worldwide RAF operations and could operate from short or austere airfields where larger transports could not. The Lyneham Transport Wing brought together the station's Hercules squadrons to provide a flexible expeditionary airlift capability supporting British forces around the world. XV297 served through decades of operations before the RAF gradually replaced its original Hercules C.Mk 1 fleet with newer stretched C-130J Hercules C4 aircraft.

Lockheed Hercules C.Mk 1

Designed to function as a troop, medical evacuation and cargo transport aircraft, the C-130 Hercules was first flown on August 23rd, 1954. Built by Lockheed and capable of over 40,000 lbs of payload, this four-engine turboprop aircraft is quite possibly the most versatile tactical transport in existence. Its modern roles include airlift and airdrop, electronic surveillance, search and rescue, space-capsule recovery, helicopter refueling and aerial attack. Capable of takeoffs and landings from unprepared runways, the C-130 has even landed and taken off from a carrier deck without benefit of arresting gear or catapults.
