Luftwaffe RF-4E Phantom II 35+40 served with Aufklarungsgeschwader 51 "Immelmann," one of West Germany's principal tactical reconnaissance units during the Cold War. The RF-4E combined the Phantom's speed, range, and ruggedness with a specialized camera-equipped nose containing optical reconnaissance systems. AG 51 operated the type from Bremgarten Air Base, conducting low level photographic reconnaissance missions in support of NATO. Crews trained to penetrate defended airspace at high speed while collecting detailed imagery of potential targets and troop movements. Aircraft 35+40 represented an important component of NATO's reconnaissance capability until the Luftwaffe retired its RF-4Es in 1994 and transferred the mission to the Tornado.
Designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy, the F-4 Phantom was first flown on May 27, 1958. This twin-engine, long-range all-weather fighter/bomber proved highly adaptable and served in the Marine Corps and the US Air Force as well as in the Navy. During the Vietnam War, it was the principal air superiority fighter for the Navy and the Air Force and was also used for reconnaissance and ground attack. The Phantom continued to serve well into the 1970s and 1980s and even flew missions during the first Gulf War.
