The Boeing E-3 Sentry is an American airborne early warning and control aircraft developed by Boeing. E-3s are commonly known as AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System). Derived from the Boeing 707, it provides all-weather surveillance, command, control, and communications, and is used by the United States Air Force, NATO, Royal Air Force, French Air and Space Force, and Royal Saudi Air Force. The E-3 is distinguished by the distinctive rotating radar dome (rotodome) above the fuselage. Production ended in 1992 after 68 aircraft had been built.
Designed to meet a USAF requirement for an AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control System) aircraft, the E-3 was first flown on May 25th, 1976. The design uses the basic airframe of the commerical 707-320B and adds a 30 foot diameter rotating radar dome atop a pair of 11 foot tall struts. The radar system is capable of detecting and tracking low-flying targets at a range of 250 miles or mideium to high-altitude targets as far away as 400 miles. Onboard data-processing systems present Console operators with a wide range of information, enabling them to protect and guide friendly forces on the battlefield. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
