Armee de l'Air LeO 451 No. 22 served with Groupe de Bombardement I/31 during the 1940 Battle of France. The sleek Liore et Olivier LeO 451 was one of France's most advanced medium bombers, featuring retractable landing gear, an enclosed cockpit, and considerably higher performance than the older bombers it replaced. GB I/31 employed its LeO 451s against advancing German forces, communications, and transportation targets during the desperate fighting of May and June 1940. Crews frequently encountered heavy fighter and anti-aircraft opposition. Despite significant losses and limited numbers, the LeO 451 demonstrated impressive speed and remained an important French bomber throughout the campaign.

Liore-et-Olivier LeO 451

Designed to meet a French specification for a four-seat day-bomber, the LeO451 was first flown on January 16th, 1937.
