The Ukrainian Air Force inherited a substantial fleet of Antonov An-26 transports following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Designed and originally manufactured in Ukraine by Antonov, the twin turboprop An-26 became an important light tactical transport for the country's armed forces. Its rear loading ramp and rugged construction allow it to carry troops, cargo, equipment, and casualties while operating from relatively short or austere airfields. Ukrainian An-26s have performed transport, training, humanitarian, and logistical support missions for decades. The type has also supported Ukrainian forces during wartime operations, although combat losses and accidents have significantly reduced the surviving fleet.
