The People's Liberation Army Air Force operated the Antonov An-26, NATO reporting name "Curl," as a light tactical transport. Developed from the An-24, the An-26 incorporated a redesigned rear fuselage with a large cargo door and loading ramp, allowing troops, supplies, vehicles, and palletized freight to be loaded quickly. Its twin turboprop engines, rugged landing gear, and short field capability made it useful for supporting remote military installations and transporting personnel throughout China's extensive territory. The An-26 supplemented other Soviet designed and Chinese built transports in PLAAF service and proved well suited to routine military logistics and utility missions.
