The military version of the Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation was used to serve as an airborne early warning system to supplement the Distant Early Warning Line, using two large radomes (a vertical dome above and a horizontal one below the fuselage). It was operational in the 1950s with the United States Air Force (as the EC-121 Warning Star) and the United States Navy (as the WC-121 Warning Star), where it also fulfilled the Weather Reconnaissance role.
Designed to meet Pan Am and TWA requirements for a 40 passenger airliner, the Constellation was first flown in its military version of C69 on January 9th, 1943. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
