71-1407 was the first of two EC-137D AWACS prototypes, which first flew on 5th February 1972. Both prototypes were upgraded to E-3A operational standard and were part of the thirty four aircraft procured by the USAF, of which the first production E-3A flew on 31st October 1975 and first delivery was made in March 1977 to the 552nd AC&CW at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. As the prototype aircraft, 71-1407 became the personal aircraft of the Wing Commander and received special markings accordingly.
Designed to meet a USAF requirement for an AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control System) aircraft, the E-3 was first flown on May 25th, 1976. The design uses the basic airframe of the commerical 707-320B and adds a 30 foot diameter rotating radar dome atop a pair of 11 foot tall struts. The radar system is capable of detecting and tracking low-flying targets at a range of 250 miles or mideium to high-altitude targets as far away as 400 miles. Onboard data-processing systems present Console operators with a wide range of information, enabling them to protect and guide friendly forces on the battlefield. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
