The SU-27 is the current show-piece fighter jet of the Russian airforce. It was created in the engineering office of Pavel Osipowitsch Suchoi in 1971. The advanced two seated training version SU-27UB is today the craft the stunt pilot squadron already established in 1946 operates. Its home air base is Kubinka, 60 kilometers west of Moscow. Six SU-27UBs entered the squadron in 1989 and enabled the aerobatics team to demonstrate spectacular maneuvers. Herpa presents two originals as models, the machines with the registrations 20 and 25, which belong to the 237th flight demonstration center Ivan Kozhedub (TsPAT). The 20 will be released with open and the 25 with closed cockpit. Please note: Unlike other models in the Herpa Wings series, this model features a permanently opened canopy and cannot be configured with the canopy in the closed position. Designed by the Soviet Union to challenge the superiority of fourth generation US fighters such as the F-15 Eagle, the Su-27 was first flown on May 20, 1977. This one seat Mach-2 fighter had the Soviet Union's first operational fly-by-wire system. The aircraft is very large compared to the MiG-29, its closest Soviet counterpart, but it is built with a high percentage of titanium, which helps minimize its weight. It is exceptionally agile and is perhaps most famous for its "Cobra" maneuver, which is a short, sustained level flight at a 120 degree angle of attack, often performed at air shows. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
