This model depicts a vehicle fighting in 1945 in the defense of Germany, with a very realistic two-tone camouflage paint scheme that is also authentically weathered. Also included are other appropriate late production features such as the correct return rollers and the modified rear exhaust system.
The Jagdpanzer, with its low profile and powerful 75mm gun, was an ideal German anti-tank weapon to be used against the Allies and Russians as they pressed in on the Fatherland. The Late Production model, because of the heavier gun, was nose heavy, and so the front wheels had steel rims rather than rubber, as the rubber wore out too rapidly. The Jagdpanzer IV was sometimes given the nickname of "Guderian's Chicken", and muzzle brakes were quickly deleted because with the gun barrel being so close to the ground, great amounts of dust were kicked up upon firing.
The Jagdpanzer IV's development began in just after the battle of Stalingrad when the Whermacht Arms Bureau asked for a new standard tank hunter that had more armour and was lower profile than the StuG III. The Jagdpanzer IV first went into service in 1943 and served in the battle of the Bulge, Normandy and on the eastern front. The first production variant of the Jagdpanzer IV had 100mm of frontal armour and 40-50mm on the sides. The Jagdpanzer IV was first armed with the 75mm Pak 39 L/48 main gun, the same gun used on the StuG III, Panzer IV and many others. The later version mounted the 75mm Pak 42 L/70, which some believed was more powerful than the 88mm anti-aircraft gun. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Dragon's 1:72 scale Jagdpanzer IV is constructed almost entirely from plastic, which allows for the greatest possible detail. This model is beautifully recreated, with periscope binoculars rising through the fixed-open hatch, separately-applied armor plates on either side of the engine deck, an elevating 75mm cannon, separately-attached spare track and road wheels and an array of hand-painted tools such as a shovel, hatchet and track repair equipment with simulated attachment bands. Maintenance hatches, leaf-spring suspension and rivets can be clearly seen on the underside. Some releases in this series include side-mounted armor plates over the vehicle's tracks and a delicate antenna.
