The C1 was a variant of the civil "Standard VC-10" fitted with the wing and more powerful engines of the "Super VC-10." The C1 can carry 139 passengers in rear-facing seats, eight standard pallets or up to 78 medical evacuation stretchers. The strengthened floor allowed the C1 to transport 1,000-lb. bombs for the Tornado GR1 force during the Gulf War, each aircraft carrying 50 per flight. During the war, No. 10 Sq. flew 1,326 sorties in over 5,000 hours. The squadron also took part in most other operations involving British forces, including the 1982 Falklands War and the 2003 war in Iraq.

Vickers VC10

Designed to meet a need for a jet aircraft that could comfortably take off from and land on shorter runways, the Vickers VC10 was first flown on June 29, 1962. This long-range British airliner holds a long-standing record for the fastest Atlantic crossing by a sub-sonic airliner (only the supersonic Concorde has beaten its record). Advanced even for its time, the VC10 was designed with a quadruplicated automatic flight control system, which enabled fully automatic landings in zero-visibility conditions. Despite its promise, the VC10 only served as an airliner for 15 years; in the 1970s it was removed from service because of the high noise levels it produced on departure and approach.

Corgi's 1:144 scale VC10 is large in this scale and features near-solid diecast construction. The model's sleek tubular shaped fuselage and wonderfully sculpted nose has pad-printed windows and doors that do not interrupt the lines of the aircraft. The solid metal wing has large individually applied wing fences attached to the top inboard surface, and details of its "flower flap" system are found at the trailing edge. Individual releases in this series include a passenger airliner and an aerial refueling platform with refueling pods located under each wing.
