The P51 Mustang was the most successful World War II US fighter in the European Theater. The American Mustangs destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft in Europe making it the highest scoring US fighter in the theater. The popular and powerful P51D was the most versatile, most feared, and produced in the greatest quantities, over 7,900 in WWII.
Designed to meet an RAF requirement for fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, the P-51 Mustang was first flown on October 26th, 1940. This versatile aircraft was capable of escorting bombers on long-range missions, engaging in dogfights, and dropping down to destroy German targets on the ground. At least eight versions of the P-51 were produced, but it was the definitive P-51D that gave the Mustang its classic warbird appearance. Britain and the US both tested the airframe with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, which gave the aircraft tremendous performance gains. The Truman Senate War Investigating Committee called the Mustang "the most aerodynamically perfect pursuit plane in existence." © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Forces of Valor's 1:32 scale P-51 Mustang is constructed almost entirely from diecast metal. The wings have movable ailerons and correctly articulating flaps that slide out of the wing when deployed. The landing gear and gear doors are hinged, and hydraulic lines and structural details can be viewed inside the wheel wells. Other fine details can be seen on the rockets and hard points and on the removable wing-mounted drop tanks, which include external fuel transfer lines. The radiator cowling with internal actuator opens and closes, the rudders and elevators move and the canopy slides open to reveal a pilot figure and detailed gun sight.
