Ernst Schröder volunteered to join the Luftwaffe in 1914 and was initially trained as a mechanic on the He 111. He transferred to pilot school A23 at Kaufbeuren in 1943 and, after earning his wings, was transferred to JG.101 in Pau/Lourdes in the south of France for fighter pilot training. One of his commanding officers there was Major Walter Nowotny. In June 1944 he was transferred to the Jagdergänzungsgruppe West were he was introduced to the Fw 190. His first combat flight was on August 6. 1944. He flew 19 of his 41 combat flights with Fw 190A-8/R8 Red 19. His last flight in this aircraft was on October 10th, 1944 when he belly-landed Red 19 after a fight with a P-51 Mustang. At war’s end he escaped becoming a prisoner of war by writing himself dismissal papers in an abandoned Luftwaffe office truck! Designed by Kurt Tank, the Fw-190A was first flown on June 1st, 1939. This small, yet ferociously-powered aircraft was fast and maneuverable and packed a fierce armament package earning it the nickname "Butcher Bird". The wide landing gear, excellent visibility and high-altitude paddle-bladed propeller endeared it to pilots familiar with the shortcomings of its predecessor - the Messerschmitt Bf 109. Some of the Luftwaffe's most famous fighter aces flew the Fw 190. Many variants were produced during the war, with the most notable being the inline-engine equipped and longer-nosed 190D, known as the "Dora." © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
