The AgustaWestland AW101 is a medium-lift helicopter used in both military and civil applications. It was developed by joint venture between Westland Helicopters in the UK and Agusta in Italy in response to national requirements for a modern naval utility helicopter. Several operators, including the armed forces of Britain, Denmark and Portugal, use the name Merlin for their AW101 aircraft.
Desgined to meet British and Italian Navy requirements for a Sea King replacement, the AgustaWestland AW101 (originally the European Helicopter Industries EH-101) was first flown on October 9th, 1987. The design makes extensive use of composite materials and cutting-edge technologies including active vibration control and high-efficiency paddle-tipped rotor blades. A rear cargo ramp provides access to large cargo compartment capable of carrying 24 seated or 45 standing troops and equipment or even a small vehicle such as the British Land Rover. The AW101 is highly-capable in the Air-Sea Rescue, Airborne Early Warning and Anti-Submarine Warfare roles. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
